Renovation concept transforming existing buildings into healthy, energy-efficient and comfortable homes
Active House Apartments is a concept for transforming existing residential buildings into healthy, comfortable and energy-efficient living environments. Instead of new construction, the project focuses on upgrading what already exists, improving indoor comfort, reducing energy demand and increasing long-term value.
Why renovation
Most buildings already exist and renovation is the fastest and most scalable way to improve living conditions, reduce energy consumption and address climate challenges.
District-scale impact
The project was developed as part of the Green Renovation Wave for Ukraine initiative, exploring how entire districts can be upgraded using sustainable and healthy renovation strategies.
It demonstrates how renovation can:
- improve energy efficiency and reduce dependence on fossil fuels
- upgrade indoor comfort and health conditions
- create new living space without new construction
- support local communities and economic recovery
Evidence-based & research-driven
The concept is based on research, real measurements and international experience in sustainable and healthy buildings, including Active House and EU frameworks (New European Bauhaus and Level(s))
Applied in education
This project is also part of a professional course on neuroarchitecture and sustainable design, where renovation is presented as a key strategy for improving health, comfort and building performance.
Result: improved indoor comfort, reduced energy consumption and increased property value through renovation.
Awards: Active House Awards 2022. Winner of the Transforming Active Spaces (Built with radar category)

“A stunning example of how a building can be transformed thanks to a very special material: the light. The new space looks amazing in terms of articulation and the possibility to have stakeffktand ventilation thanks to the presence of the roof windows. An example that matches the New European Bauhaus values".”. Jury.
The future is not building new - it is upgrading existing!
